Consumers Want Flexibility of Digital Reading

June 28, 2017

Access at Your Fingertips

Digital reading continues to be where users are leaning. Everyone loves a good paperback book, but the convenience and instantaneous delivery of a digital edition seem to be a no brainer next move for publishers. E-readers may not be the big craze, but we still have our smartphones stuck on us like glue.

Devices Change, Digital Reading Continues

While the use and purchasing of e-readers have been steady since 2011, that does not mean that people are not reading digitally. Instead, because of the rise and ease of smart devices, such as the iPhone and iPad, people are opting to use these devices when reading digitally.

“The share of e-book readers on tablets has more than tripled since 2011 and the number of readers on phones has more than doubled over that time” (Perrin 2016).

blog post on flipsnack cites Mequoda when it reports that 59 percent of people said a digital version of a magazine was the most important version, citing different types of devices, from smartphones to tablets. The proof is in the data—although digital reading on e-readers may not be growing anymore, digital reading is still happening.

59.28 percent report the digital edition as most important.

Similarly, the study by the Pew Research Center on reading trends in 2016 reports that while only 6 percent of the people surveyed exclusively read from digital formats, 28 percent reported reading from both print and digital sources. People are still looking for and value digital versions of the content they read, even if they like to have a print version on hand too.
